To Fan or Not to Fan The MacBook Air Retina, That Is The Question

#IOS #iCloud - It’s generally expected that Apple will upgrade its next generation of MacBook Air devices with a Retina display, but there are a number of design elements that won’t make the process very easy. It’s not just a case of slapping on the new display, as users also expect a faster processor and better performance, which in turns means more battery power. Believe it or not, one of the key components in all of this is the CPU fan, or rather the decision about whether to include one or not. Many experts have been predicting that future Apple devices will go fanless thanks to Intel’s new Core M processor, which uses a lot less power than the current mainstays. In theory Apple could upgrade the MacBook Air with a Retina display, and include a larger battery to accommodate this, without being stunted by the need to also include a fan, which would probably force them to make the device bigger.

Unfortunately so far the Core M processor has not really been living up to its hype. One of the first devices to adopt the CPU and hype its fanless technology was the Lenovo Yoga 3, only for it to be revealed late in the game that it did indeed need a fan and when benchmarked the results were uninspiring. Upgrading to the Core M is therefore not such an upgrade after all, and Apple are essentially back at square one, trying to determine the best configuration within the MacBook Air’s small frame. The most likely scenario is that they will opt for a faster more traditional processor with fan cooling, but this may mean battery life will have to be sacrificed. One saving grace may be the new 14 nanometer Intel Broadwell processors, which also offer better battery performance, but are much better than the Core M.
